Enzo Boglietti, Piedmont, Italy
Enzo Boglietti, Piedmont, Italy
Enzo Boglietti is a family run company which began in 1991. The grapes were grown at the beginning from 2.5 ha family blocks. The family vineyards gradually increased to the actual size of 21 ha for a production of 75,000 bottles per year. The winery is located in La Morra where Boglietti family also produces five different crus of very fine Barolo. Enzo is in charge of all winery matters while his brother Gianni, who joined later in '96, manages the vineyards together with the tireless help of their father Renato.

Cigliuti, Piedmont, Italy
Cigliuti, Piedmont, Italy
The winery has belonged to the Cigliuti family for four generations. It was given its name, Fratelli Cigliuti, by Renato’s father and uncle, who until 1964 used to sell grapes and unbottled wine on the local market. The Serraboella vineyard is a ‘Grand Cru’ site with a precipitously steep SW exposure in the commune of Neive. It boasts no fewer than 12 strata of sand and limestone typical of the Tortonian soils of Barbaresco (and, incidentally, Serralunga d’Alba and Monleale).

Giuseppe Mascarello E Figlio, Piedmont, Italy
The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been making wine since 1881. The property now extends to more than 15 hectares of highly-prized vineyards, all located within the Barolo wine-making area. It’s difficult to over-estimate their influence - the family are elder statesmen in the Piemontese winemaking fraternity and they guard consistency and tradition in a region obsessed with the latest fashions.

Marco Porello, Piedmont, Italy
Marco Porello, Piedmont, Italy
"The gentle and largely sandy hills of the Roero lie immediately north of the Tanaro River and are therefore on the wrong side of the tracks as far as Barolo and Barbaresco are concerned.
""Marco Porello has been pushing the quality envelope across his entire range of wines. Marco has the estate running just the way he wants, and this enables him to focus all his energy and attention to the production side of things. In the cellars, the increasing uses of oak plays a large part in the high quality his wines have attained."" Gambero Rosso, Italian Wine"

Cabutto, Piedmont, Italy
Cabutto, Piedmont, Italy
"The Cabutto family is a well-known producer of Barolo wine in Barolo village. The history of this company dates back to the second decade of the last century. More than 20 hectares of vines mainly located in the best plots of the Langhe, the grapes harvested from different hills and expositions, bring up a unique peculiarity to the final product, a very traditional Barolo made like in the old days.
High atteantiion to details is put during all process, from collecting the grapes from several vineyards to the macerations, which takes from 25 to 30 days, and the ageing of the wine in medium to large barrels made of Slavonian oak."

Red Wine - Barolo Cabutto DOCG 2013
Vigneti Massa, Piedmont, Italy
Vigneti Massa, Piedmont, Italy
"Walter Massa and Michael Palij, Master of Wine, first met many years ago. Massa family have laboured tirelessly to keep the Timorasso grape from extinction on the steep hills just east of the city of Tortona. It is an ancient, endangered variety, which is very difficult to grow, with tiny yields and immense concentration.
“Walter Massa is pretty much the savior of the variety that was once the prime grape in Gavi, before the less interesting but less troublesome Cortese took over.” Jancis Robinson MW

Vallana, Piedmont, Italy
Vallana, Piedmont, Italy
The Antonio Vallana estate dates back to 1787 (first bottles and first commercial vineyard in the Vallana family). Tasting the wines from Alto Piemonte (North Piedmont), you can experience the different expressions of the Nebbiolo varietal. Alto Piemonte is the only place in Italy where Nebbiolo grows on acidic (rather than alcaline) soils of (super)volcanic origin. In the wines, this is expressed by the acidic backbone, which gives character and structure, and helps the wine to age for so long. With maturation, the wine shows a whole range of tertiary notes of great elegance and finesse. Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte could actually be called a «Supervolcanic» wine.

Andreola was founded by Nazareno Pola in 1984 in the small village of Col San Martino with the sole purpose of combining the ancient Prosecco terroir with modern techniques and research. The rolling green hills of the estate are planted mainly with Prosecco, plus small parcels of ancient indigenous varieties, which give their wines a wonderful authenticity that is lacking in more commercial Proseccos.

"We have had the pleasure of working with the owner/winemaker Marinella Camerani for 20 years. During this time her hard work and determination to maximize the potential of her biodynamic and organic (certified) vineyards on the lower slopes of the Lessini Mountains has ensured her wines’ steady refinement and a string of accolades. She has emerged from Valpolicella’s backwaters to take center stage amongst Italy’s most celebrated winemakers.
“Marinella Camerani can be counted on for wines of true character and personality. Organic farming and minimal handling in the cellar are some of the core principles. This is a sublime set of wines...The estate has made notable wines for some time...” eRobertParker.com"

La di Motte, Veneto, Italy
La di Motte, Veneto, Italy
"No more rants about Pinot Grigio, the necessary evil. Instead, more about the extremely good wines made by La di Motte which is now both Azienda Agricola and DOC. With the financial muscle of the Botter empire behind it, La di Motte wants for nothing. It’s a large estate by Italian standards - more than 100 hectares - planted with the usual mix of Venetian varieties but what’s unusual is the programme of continuous replanting.
More than 80% of the vineyards are now on high-density cordone speronato, the Italian variant of single guyot that works so well on the broad swathe of alluvial bench that characterizes the Piave DOC. Wines such as this show that the drive for better quality is paying dividends.

Borgo del Tiglio, Friuli Venezia-Giulia, Italy
"Nicola Manferrari, owner and winemaker, has a degree in Pharmacology but when the father passed away in 1981 he decided to take over the estate and change his life becoming a winemaker.
The history of Collio’s vineyards dates back to pre-Roman times and crosses the Middle Ages, a period in which Collio’s wines were valued throughout Europe. Nowadays the Collio appellation, recognized as one of the most important whites wine producing zones of Italy, lies in a small chain of hills, in the northeastern part of Italy.
Borgo del Tiglio is today considered one of the top estate producing white wines from Italy, their wines are famous not only for their quality but also for their long longevity.

Castello di Bossi, Tuscany, Italy
"Owner Marco Bacci has positioned himself at the vanguard of Tuscan viticulture, attracting huge critical acclaim from all corners of the world for his outstanding Chianti and Super Tuscans from three estates that also offer stunning value for money.
“These new releases from Castello di Bossi and consulting oenologist Alberto Antonini are off the charts. Prices remain very reasonable considering the quality of what is in the glass . . . Marco Bacci makes a wide range of wines across his properties in Tuscany, but those of Castello di Bossi lead the way when it comes to quality and consistency. These are rich, textured wines.” eRobertParker.com"

La Pieve, Tuscany, Italy
La Pieve, Tuscany, Italy
Michael Palij, Master of Wine, still remembers stumbling across owner/winemaker Simone Tognetti one spring morning and trying hard not to appear excited. I’m sure no one needs reminding of just how much truly dreadful Chianti pours out of Italy each year, and finding an honest producer making decent wine at a great price isn’t easy. The secret lies in the extraordinary exposure of La Pieve’s 16 hectares: an almost perfect amphitheater at 500 meters above sea level. The geography guarantees ripeness and alcohol whilst the altitude preserves acidity. The blend is a traditional Tuscan mix, fermented in stainless steel and aged in cement.

Renieri, Tuscany, Italy
Renieri, Tuscany, Italy
"Marco Bacci (of Castello di Bossi fame) only purchased the Renieri estate back in 2001 but has taken giant steps in no time at all, achieving JS 100 points in 2010 with his Brunello Riserva. He has planted more than 100 hectares of vines of which approximately 30% are Sangiovese while the remainder includes parcels of Petit Verdot, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah.Renieri's vines bask in all-day warmth on south-facing slopes with views across the spectacular volcanic Monte Amiata. Their high altitude location also provides cooling relief at night to aid perfectly slow, gradual ripening. This wonderful location together with naturally low yields produces high quality, concentrated grapes bursting with refined fruit and deliciously supple tannins."

Camillo Donati, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
"The estate is located about 20 km south of Parma, in the hills, at an altitude of about 250 m a.s.l. Only 10 hectares of vineyards cultivated as the tradition wants, following the organic and biodynamic principles. In the winery the goal is to not destroy what nature has offered. Sparkling wines are obtained through the traditional method of natural re-fermentation in the bottle, which needs
no chemical preservatives and the wines such produced improve as they get older, unlike charmat wines."

A combination of cool nights and hot days in the Matelica Valley deliver a rare balance of lively acidity and high alcohol reminiscent of fine Burgundy. The top cuvée, Mirum, which has now scooped Gambero Rosso’s Tre Bicchiere award (Italy’s wine ‘Oscar’) on five continuous occasions."

Saladini Pilastri, Marche, Italy
"Just north of the Abruzzo, nestled in the beautiful rolling limestone hills behind the walled city of Ascoli Piceno lies the estate of the Conte Saladino, one of the oldest families in the entire Marche and an estate with over 300 years winemaking behind it. Saladini Pilastri was also the first winery in the Piceno area to achieve the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award from Italy's wine bible, Gambero Rosso. All the vineyards (320 hectares) are farmed organically (since 1995) and sustainably with minimal impact on the environment and are planted with native varieties (Pecorino, Trebbiano, Sangiovese and Montepulciano), as well as a few Rhône rangers including Viognier and Syrah."

Cianfagna, Molise, Italy
Cianfagna, Molise, Italy
Molise is Italy's smallest region by population, second smallest in total area and third smallest in terms of wine produced. It has also been largely ignored as a wine-producing region. Tintilia del Molise is one of Italy's oldest indigenous grape varieties, and is being safeguarded by a handful of producers, like Cianfagna. The grape survived in a few patches here and there and was not re-discovered until the late 1990s, when a few quality-conscious producers took notice of the vine and decided to try to make a go of it, fuelled in part by the creation of the area-wide Molise DOC in 1998, which allowed wines made from at least 85% Tintilia grapes to carry the designation.

Graci, Sicily, Italy
Graci, Sicily, Italy
The winery is located on the North slope of Mount Etna at Passopisciaro, an area where viticulture goes back several thousand years.
The vineyards are located at an altitude of between 600 and 1,000 meters above sea level. Planting density ranges between 6,000 and 10,000 vines per hectare. The oldest vines are ungrafted because phylloxera didn’t survive in the volcano environment.
Etna appellation that straddles the cone of the dangerous volcano at the heart of the Mediterranean has suddenly outgrown its “up-and-coming” status.
In October 2016 Wine Spectator published an article entitled:

Porta Palo, Sicily, Italy
Porta Palo, Sicily, Italy
"Porta Palo is one of the numerous labels of Cantine Settesoli. The Estate was founded in 1958 and is now one of the most dynamic and modern wine companies in Sicily, launching international varietal wines in 2001 with the aim was to produce fine everyday wines at a fair price. We believe they have not only achieved this, but far exceeded it.
Porta Palo is a pretty seaside village on the sun-kissed south of Sicily and it is the sun and the warm climate which make the difference here. These favourable conditions produce easy drinking, quality wines that have broad appeal. Warm, sun filled days produce ripe and healthy grapes that once transformed create fruity wines that are as delicious on their own as they are with the food."
